How COVID-19 impacts food waste along the supply chain.

From Farmdoc Daily

The Covid-19 pandemic has created massive disruptions in the food system, from farm to fork. In some cases, we have observed and experienced severe food shortages. In others, food cannot reach end consumers and is ultimately wasted. Food waste is not new or novel in our current food system; however, images and reports of whole fields being plowed under and millions of gallons of milk being dumped during a time of such economic hardship and increased food insecurity raises questions about how Covid-19 has impacted food waste along the supply chain.

Dr. Endres studies the adoption of renewable energy technologies and environmental support instruments. Her research informs policy decisions regarding the structure of incentives to improve firm productivity. Other research explores sustainable tourism initiatives as a form of economic development, especially in the context of agritourism and food-based tourism.

Joe studies price and trading dynamics in agricultural commodity markets. His research evaluates the causes of commodity price fluctuations and the effect of these shocks on production, consumption, and trade. He also works to inform agricultural land use decisions by understanding the response of farmland prices to changes in production practices and policy.

Dr. Janzen uses economic theory and empirical approaches to study the dynamics of global poverty and sustainable international agricultural development. Dr. Janzen’s empirical research stems from the design and implementation of highly collaborative international impact evaluations that rigorously seek to evaluate agricultural development programs in Asia and Africa. She also employ dynamic optimization and simulation to analyze optimal consumption, asset accumulation and risk management decisions of poor vulnerable households.

Catalina studies issues at the intersection of demographic economics, gender, health, and education in developing countries. Her research examines whether fertility decisions affect women’s human capital and economic outcomes, what type of policy interventions can decrease women’s barriers to health care access, how childhood conditions can affect later economic outcomes in adulthood, and whether public policies can mitigate the long-run effects of adverse shocks, such as natural disasters, on human capital.

Menglin's research interests are in precision agriculture technologies and environmental sustainability in production agriculture. She currently studies the impacts of variable rate technology on farmer's profits and nutrient loss to the environment. Before studying agricultural and environmental economics, she was an engineer at John Deere.
